Lowell, MA / October 12, 2017 – Today, Lori Trahan officially announced her candidacy for Congress in Massachusetts’ Third District to replace Niki Tsongas who held the seat for five terms. Tsongas’ 2007 special election marked the first time in twenty-five years that a woman from Massachusetts was elected to serve in Congress.
“I’m running for Congress to fight for working families who need an effective voice in Washington,” said Trahan, a Democrat. “I will work hard for the people who are being marginalized and left behind, and I will fight for the values and economic opportunities that make this country great.”
Born and raised in Lowell, Trahan grew up in a working class home on Staples Street. Her father, Tony Loureiro, was the son of Portuguese immigrants and a proud member of the ironworkers union, while her mother, Linda (Sousa) grew up in the Franco-American orphanage in Lowell. Together they raised four girls on a union salary supplemented by part-time work. Everyone in the house worked when they could, with Lori delivering the Lowell Sun at age 11, and serving breakfast at the Owl Diner throughout high school while also playing on the varsity volleyball team. She earned a full scholarship to Georgetown and was later inducted in the Lowell High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
“The people of this District have been well served by Niki Tsongas. She broke the drought of women from Massachusetts serving in Congress and I would like to follow in her footsteps. I know the people of the Third District because this is where I grew up and have lived my entire life,” said Trahan.
In addition to her work for former Congressman Marty Meehan as his chief of staff in Washington, Trahan worked in the private sector and helped build a successful small business focused on helping companies better serve their customers and support diversity and inclusion in the workplace. She is also a working mother who, together with her husband, Dave, is raising two daughters and three sons. “I believe I’m uniquely qualified to represent our community at a time when bold reforms and skilled leadership are desperately needed,” added Trahan. The Lori Trahan for Congress Committee also announced today that it raised $241,953.00 over a two-week period from September 15 to September 30. The majority of donations were from citizens from within the Third District spanning 15 communities, with 52% coming from women.
