LOWELL —  Lori Trahan, Democrat for Congress, was endorsed today by Giffords, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly.

Giffords’ #VoteCourage campaign aims to elect gun safety advocates to Congress and defeat politicians who have historically worked against gun reform, or done nothing at all to prevent gun violence.

“Lori Trahan is fed up with Congress failing to take action to address America’s gun violence crisis. Born and raised in Massachusetts, a state with some of the strongest gun laws in the nation, Lori knows that strong gun safety measures save lives,” the Giffords’ group said of Trahan.

Trahan’s Republican opponent Rick Green has said he is against expanded background checks on firearm purchases and does not want the federal government to regulate access on high-capacity magazines and semi-automatic weapons.

“There is no compromising on this issue — we need common sense gun reform and we need it now,” Trahan said. “Gun violence is the second-leading killer of children in this country. We need leaders in Washington who will stand up to the gun lobby and demand action to keep our children safe. Anything less is immoral.”

In Congress, Trahan will fight for comprehensive background checks for all gun purchases, closing the gun show loophole, banning bump stocks as well as assault weapons.

Trahan has already been named a “Gun Sense Candidate” by Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense in America. She announced the Giffords’ endorsement at a chapter meeting on Tuesday.

“At an important inflection point in our country, we need a President who will unite rather than divide, who will lead rather than go low.” Trahan said. “Trump’s recent mocking of Dr. Ford, a credible victim of sexual assault and, by all accounts, a true profile in courage, is outrageous. Moral high ground has been replaced with political partisanship at it’s worst, and is an egregious example of what’s wrong with Washington today.”

LOWELL, Mass. – At a Democratic unity event held today, eight out of the 10 Democratic candidates for Congress in the Third Congressional District, along with Congresswoman Niki Tsongas, joined together in endorsing Lori Trahan in the general election and offering their full support.

Organized by the state Democratic Party and emceed by former state Rep. Barbara L’Italien, other speakers included Leonard Golder, Bopha Malone, Jeffrey Ballinger, Beej Das, Alexandra Chandler, Rufus Gifford and Dan Koh. Juana Matias was unable to attend.

“The party stands united in sending Lori to Washington in November,” said Gus Bickford, chair of the state Democratic Party.  “Not only is this the Year of the Democrat, but the Year of the Woman.”

Tsongas said women’s voices are “critically needed to help enable women to achieve greater economic security, raise wages for women and their families, and allow working parents to support and care for their families.”

“That’s why I’m so proud to be here today to enthusiastically support Lori Trahan for U.S. Congress,” Tsongas said.

Trahan said she will fight for Democratic priorities, including universal health care, affordable prescription drugs, good paying jobs with benefits, quality public education, and common sense gun laws.

“We need more voices in Washington who are going to stand up to Donald Trump, hold this Administration accountable and restore the values of our country,” Trahan said. “We need a Congress that puts working and middle class families first; and not corporations and special interests.”

Trahan also thanked her challengers, as well as Tsongas, for her support.

“This was a hard-fought race and we all surfaced issues that meant so much to us, our families and our communities,” Trahan said. “But one thing we all shared in common is a core belief that now more than ever, we need more voices in Washington – like Niki Tsongas – who are going to stand up to Donald Trump, hold this Administration accountable and restore the values of our country.”

LOWELL  — Lori Trahan, Democrat for Congress, announced today she is officially the Democratic nominee for the Third Congressional District.

At a press conference, Trahan said she received a call from Dan Koh offering his full support in the Nov. 6 election.

“Dan Koh called to congratulate me and graciously offer his support in the weeks to come,” Trahan said. “His campaign stood for many of the values that are important to me, and we will continue to fight for those values together.”

Trahan said she will “leverage all of my experience — working in Washington, serving the communities of this district, leading a tech company, starting a successful business — to get things done.”

“My deep roots in the district will be a constant reminder of who I am doing this job for,” Trahan said. “It’s time for a new breed of leaders who will stand up for working class families, seniors and women, and root out the corruptive influence of corporate money and special interests.”

The Massachusetts Democratic Party will host a unity event for Trahan tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 11 a.m. at the UMass Inn and Conference Center, 50 Warren St., Lowell. She will be joined by Dan Koh, Congresswoman Niki Tsongas, as well as other elected officials.

Secretary of State Galvin’s certified results show Trahan finished with 18,527 votes

LOWELL, Mass. (Sept. 9, 2018) — Each of the Third District’s 37 communities has reported its certified vote tallies to the Secretary of State and the results show that Democrat for Congress Lori Trahan won Tuesday’s primary by 122 votes.

Trahan thanked election officials who have been working long hours to ensure each and every vote in this race was counted.

“I’m energized and ready for what will be a hard-fought battle against a Republican with deep pockets and strong ties to Trump,” Trahan said. “My campaign must go forward full-steam ahead to keep this seat with the Democrats and continue the Tsongas legacy of serving the working families of this district.”

The results from Secretary of State William Galvin’s office show Trahan finished with a total vote of 18,527.

LOWELL, Mass. — Lori Trahan, Democrat for Congress, announced her lead in the race for the Third District has more than doubled with over 80 percent of the vote certified by city and town clerks.

“A big part of campaigning is about building trust with the people you will represent in Washington. I believe it is vital for everyone to have confidence in the result of this week’s primary, and I respect the right of the Koh campaign to pursue a recount,” Trahan said at her “Women for Lori” rally in Lowell. “But I continue to believe that when all the votes are counted again, I will remain the Democratic nominee for Congress.”

With about 80 percent of results certified by city and town clerks across this district, Trahan’s lead has more than doubled from 52 to 131. Among the communities reporting include Andover, Lowell, Lawrence, Haverhill, Methuen, Chelmsford, Fitchburg, Acton, Concord and Carlisle among others. (Chart attached)

“Due to the compressed nature of the general election calendar, our campaign has no choice but to turn our focus toward November 6th, toward building a winning campaign, and beginning our fight against a well-financed Republican who will support irresponsible and divisive Administration,” she said.

Trahan was joined in her rally by her former opponents state Sen. Barbara L’Italien, state Rep. Juana Matias, and Bopha Malone. Congresswoman Katherine Clark was unable to attend the event due to an unexpected family emergency, but shared the following statement:

“Whether it’s access to health care, the ability to take care of our families or protecting reproductive rights, women understand what’s at stake and are leading the way in holding Trump and the Republican controlled Congress accountable,” said Congresswoman Clark.

Three women Democrats in the race each spoke of the urgency to begin the campaign to ensure the seat stays with a Democrat.

“We need strong Democrats in Washington who will fight Trump and the Republicans to ensure the U.S. remains a place where the ‘American Dream’ remains accessible,” Malone said. “Lori understands the struggles of the families of Lowell and I know she will work hard for this district.”

L’Italien said it is “critical” that the seat continue to be held by a woman and a Democrat.

“We’re trying desperately to stop Trump and his attacks on women’s rights, on women’s reproductive health — these are all things that we thought were settled decades ago and they are all under attack again,” L’Italien said. “It’s incumbent on all of us that we start today, to being helping Lori finish strong, to get her to Congress to and to represent all of us in the Third District.”

Matias agreed.

“We need more women at the table. We must also make a commitment that this seat is served by a Democrat,” said Matias, adding Lori “is bringing the values we so deeply need to Washington.”

Lori Trahan, Democrat for Congress, will make campaign stops in each of the Third District’s 37 communities in the 72 hours leading up to Tuesday’s primary.

The tour starts Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. in Chelmsford and ends in Lowell on Monday night at 8:30 p.m.

“The voters deserve one last chance to hit me with their questions and make me work to earn their vote,” Trahan said. “It’s also a chance for me to say thank you to my supporters throughout the district who have worked so hard to help me and my campaign over these last 11 months.”

Trahan said she knows it will be a challenge to get to all 37 communities in such a short amount of time, but she’s ready and excited for it.

“The Third District has always been my home and I’m so inspired by the families here and the support they have shown,” Trahan said. “We’ve got momentum and I am ready to roll.”
